When Wold JJCA's Julie Carpenter and her teammates captured the USTA Southern Sectional Championship in the 3.5 division for players age 55 and over, they earned far more than a trophy. They earned the opportunity to represent the Southern Section at the USTA National Championships this October in Orlando, Florida.
A remarkable accomplishment after advancing through local league play, winning the Tennessee State Championship, and then defeating teams from eight states to claim the sectional title. For Julie, however, the real reward isn't the championship itself.
"I just want to play my best on any given day," she says. That mindset carried her team through an unexpected championship run. After finishing fourth in round-robin play, Tennessee upset powerhouse South Carolina in the semifinals before winning the finals to claim the title. It wasn't the outcome anyone expected, but it was proof that preparation, teamwork, and believing in one another can make all the difference.
Julie has been playing tennis for nearly 35 years, beginning as a complete beginner after moving to Atlanta and looking for a way to meet people. Decades later, that same reason continues to inspire her. While the competition is exciting, it's the friendships that keep her coming back.
This year's championship team included many players who had only met a few months earlier. By the end of the season, they weren't simply teammates — they were celebrating together, sharing meals, planning their next trip, and building friendships that extended well beyond the tennis court. As Julie puts it, one of the greatest rewards has been meeting new people in her age group who share the same passion and appreciation for staying active.
That perspective reflects something all of us can appreciate. Whether on a tennis court, in the workplace, or in our communities, success isn't always measured by wins and losses. It's found in showing up, supporting one another, continuing to learn, and giving your best effort every day.
Congratulations to Julie and her teammates on an incredible accomplishment. We'll be cheering them on as they compete against the nation's best at the USTA National Championships this fall.
