JJCA: A “Contractor’s Architect”
Ben Gambrel, project manager with construction firm Brasfield & Gorrie, has been working with us on Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. Ben calls JJCA a real contractor’s architect, and explains that statement this way:
“It’s refreshing to work with an architect that sees the big picture. JJCA truly understands constructability in design – they just get it. They aren’t married to their design if it jeopardizes functionality. I’ve never worked with an architect that is as thorough and practical in the CA process as JJCA.”
So how does all of this translate into a benefit to an owner like Phelps Memorial? Ben says,
In working with us on Phelps, Ben says that the way we’ve laid out very clean phases for the project makes construction more efficient. He says a phased approach is very typical in a community hospital project:
“In most cases – like with Phelps – a community hospital is doing some kind of replace-in-place and/or renovation project. They typically aren’t in the position to start with a vacant piece of land and build a new facility like an urban hospital is likely to be. In the Phelps project, we are tying into three sides of an existing hospital and that requires the ability to adapt and modify on the fly because there is no way to anticipate everything that may happen in connecting new with old. Additionally, in a replace-in-place, the owner is on-site daily to participate in the process. So they are able to quickly identify changes that need to be made. Dealing with constant change is where JJCA’s detailed project management and communication processes really shine. Their ability to respond quickly and efficiently saves everyone time, and ultimately money. I work with a team of three people at JJCA – David Brown, Steven Reutter, and Jason Putnal. But it’s like working with a single point of contact because any one of the three can resolve an issue immediately.”
Ben says when working with JJCA it isn’t the architect and the contractor, it’s a design and construction team, a true partnership. We feel the same way about working with Ben. And we know this kind of teamwork benefits clients like Phelps.
