From the materials used in construction to the labor to build this cabin-in-the-woods retreat, St. Mary’s Sewanee’s new sleeping unit is truly a locally-grown product. JJCA has been working for nearly eight years with St. Mary’s Sewanee, a religious retreat center located atop the Cumberland Plateau, to develop a long-term master plan designed to better meet their objectives. Phase 1 of the plan was put in motion in 2011 with a 20-room sleeping unit. Designed to have a cabin-in-the-woods feel complementing the landscape of the bluff, the building is constructed of locally-harvested mountain stone and rough-sawn red oak cut from nearby forests. The construction crew, all from the local Cumberland Plateau area, was led by local home builder, Meeks Specialty Craft, who performed most of the work. A dedication for the new sleeping unit was held on March 8-9. A meeting room addition is scheduled for completion in April.
