Ho Ho Holiday Ornament Contest 2012

The annual JJCA ornament contest always brings out the creative juices in team members but with the addition of awards this year, the competition really got interesting.  Part of the contest includes the presentation and explanation of ornaments, all of which need to tell a story that is relevant to what has transpired in the JJCA world for the year.  For 2012, judging was done by family members of our JJCA team. It appears the judges were really swayed by “Best Overall” award winner Steven Reutter’s garland decorated with the evidence of his road warrior status, like bags of peanuts, drink tickets, and the like.

This year’s other two winners were:  David Johnson, for “Best Use of Office Resources” – a variety of every day office materials come “AL!VE” to create the icon that represents one of our most interesting projects to-date.  And another prize also featured this same project: Jason Putnal won the “Wear your Waders” for a miniature version of the AL!VE floorplan.  (Your interpretation of the meaning of this award is probably correct!)

AL!VE Grows

We continue our work with the great folks at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte, Michigan as the community’s very unique health and wellness center, AL!VE, continues to GROW, both in size and membership.

On December 9, AL!VE held an open house to celebrate the addition of “GROW” – a new child care area that features an indoor treehouse play structure known as VITALITREE and a rock climbing garden outdoor playground, as well as several other new areas:

  • GATHER, a conference area with meeting rooms available to the community
  • MOVE, a wellness gym with areas dedicated for lifting weights called BUILD and a cardio theater called PULSE
  • An extension of EXPLORE, the indoor walking path which extends the length from a 1/16 mile loop to a 1/9 mile loop
  • Men’s and women’s locker rooms called INDULGE offer members access to locker rooms, showers, and saunas in a spa-type setting

The open house, held on Sunday, attracted 100 new members to AL!VE – a 10% increase in membership.  They must have been really excited about the addition of GROW:   25 kids were dropped off there the very next day, giving their parents the opportunity to take advantage of the many programs, classes, fitness opportunities and other healthy benefits offered by AL!VE.

Effingham: One Year Later

When you design community hospitals and other healthcare facilities for a living, the real test of success isn’t the facility but the facilitation: how well the buildings we design facilitate the healing process, for patients, staff and visitors.  That’s why  we participate in the annual one-year warranty walk-through, an activity that usually only involves the contractor and owner but one that we find tremendously beneficial in helping us continuously improve our design approach and processes.  We’ve found that a year in a new facility gives hospital administration and staff – as well as patients and visitors – a chance to really get to know the place and identify the little things they might have done differently.

At Effingham, we found that, overall, everyone is quite happy with the new surgery, imaging and emergency departments.  Most often, we find that it’s little things – with easy fixes – that can maximize efficiencies.  A few quick examples from Effingham included the addition of a shelf for scrubbing supplies beside scrub sinks; signage to distinguish between automatic door push pads to distinguish between doors; a deeper, non-ADA compliant sink in the decontamination room; and an additional desk instead of storage in the triage room.

Pick a door – just not any door.

As experts in rural healthcare design, JJCA understands the nuances associated with “right-sizing” many of the concepts used by urban facilities so that community hospitals can leverage them.  In our latest blog post on HealthcareDesign.com, our own Michael Speck, AIA, discusses the many reasons that the main entrance to a critical access hospital is not only an important design feature, but a critical one in directing visitors and supporting efficient patient and staff flow.

Read all about it here – then stay tuned for Michael’s next installment, where he’ll right-size one of the most “critical” elements of design for critical access hospitals: designing for staffing efficiency.

Sharing Expertise: Healthcare Design Magazine Blogpost

We know that no matter how much a hospital wishes to provide a community with state-of-the-art healthcare, nothing can happen if there’s no money available to fund renovations, additions, or design and construction of a replacement hospital. That’s why we’re spreading the word in as many ways as possible that HUD 242 may be the answer to the funding question.  If you aren’t familiar with HUD 242, check out David Brown’s recent blog post on Healthcare Design Magazine’s website.
