JJCA’s master plan for Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gym started with major renovations in 1999 but continued for almost a decade, culminating in 2008 with a new gym floor, plus locker rooms, training and treatment areas, team lounges, and interview and team film viewing rooms. So while the Commodores took their time-out between seasons, we were on our “A” game to quickly and efficiently create a special place for coaches and players to come together outside of practice for a little camaraderie. The original gym was built in numerous phases, resulting in an erratic column grid and clearances. We had to work against the clock to overcome these issues and get everything ready before the start of the next season
More than just traditional locker rooms and showers, the space now includes a juice bar, pool table, video game area, study niches, and plenty of comfortable seating for taller than average individuals. For the first time the team also has a dedicated room for watching film as well as an improved training facility. Glass blocks from the old women’s locker room can now be found in the windows, just to be sure the old magic sees us through to the seasons to come.
